Transportation in and out
Given its proximity to the Alps, Grenoble is not as easy to reach as a major European capital, for instance. The local airport is no longer a practical travel option, but there are other easy and fast ways to reach the French city. As for local urban trips, the public network will provide you with efficient transportation options.
By Train
• From Paris (Gare de Lyon): cost of one-way trip is 60 – 85 EUR; trip duration is 3 ½ hours
• From Chambéry: cost of one-way trip is 9 EUR; trip duration is 30 minutes
By Car
• A6 Paris – Lyon, then A48 for Grenoble (trip duration: 7 hours)
By Bus or Tram (the Semitag network)
• Cost of 1 ticket: 1.30 EUR (discount for buying 10 or more; a variety of passes also available)
• Validation procedure: buy tickets from vending machines (for trams) or from the bus driver; stamp them at a “composter” on the waiting platform (for trams) or in the bus
By Bike
• General info: Grenoble is suitable for bike riding because it is quite flat, despite its mountainous outskirts.
• Recommended tracks: those following the Isere and Drac rivers; the tracks on the main boulevards
• Renting: at the railway station or the MetroVelo offices; cost /day is approx. 5 EUR
